Workshops & Masterclasses (PM - GROUP #2)

WebVR, in which the web browser is the access point for virtual and augmented reality, will be the focus of the symposium second day. We’ll examine the new tools and processes to create for WebVR. The last compatible virtual and augmented reality headsets will be shown and compared.

Meanwhile, the tools and techniques for live capturing and streaming 3D spaces will be explained and analyzed. Finally, we’ll study the impact of high fidelity acoustic modelling on one’s perception of virtual physical space.

A-Frame is an HTML-based markup language that lets you create WebVR apps quickly. In this workshop, we will use A-Frame, combined with a framework called AR.js to create augmented reality (AR) avatars. We will guide you through creating your first A-Frame app and making it available on the web. Then, we will add augmented reality features to our apps, using them to augment different parts of our bodies. Come create your own augmented reality avatar with us !

GHOST ORCHESTRA : The workshop reports the results of past and present projects concerned with Virtual Reality (VR) auralization. The "Ghost Orchestra" project, part of the BiLi (Binaural Listening) project, will be presented and its results discussed. Ghost Orchestra aimed at reproducing a concert given for the 850th birthday of the Notre Dame de Paris cathedral in VR. The auralization was based on impulse responses, simulated from a geometrical acoustic model calibrated with in-situ measurements.

WFS/SPATIAL AUDIO : Sound spatialization, everybody talks about it. To this end, the sound field reproduction method known as Wave Field Synthesis (WFS) relies on high-density loudspeaker arrays to achieve a physical reconstruction of a given sound pressure field. Different from the methods targeting headphones, WFS is aimed at an extended listening area from groups of listeners or moving listeners. For this workshop, WFS will be presented using simple terms from perceptual and physical perspectives. The objective of the workshop is to clarify any myths related to WFS and to show that WFS can be easily understood and achieved.

Greg Downing's workshop will present details on recent projects that will vary from walking in an Egyptian Tomb, to playing with Icelandic Landscapes, to a virtual visit to the Smithsonian Museum. The session will include application, background and descriptions of photogrammetry techniques.

How to expand the use of Unreal, Unity or Blender beyond the development and delivery of applications based VR/AR. How do ReactVR or a-Frame, the new webVR authoring platform, compare with established powerful authoring tools. This workshop will discuss the pro and cons of the authoring and delivery workflows in XR (VR/AR/MR).
