CREATING / PERFORMING FROM WITHIN

Workshops & Masterclasses (PM - GROUP #2)

In these workshops, we’ll examine how world building is going from science fiction to reality. The new tools for live creation in-VR/AR, as well as interactive performance tools for immersive environments will be presented and evaluated.

The issue of fluid transitions between experiencing physical and virtual spaces will be discussed. Finally, we’ll study the tools and techniques for creating generative sound.

Workshops list :

COMPOSING FOR IMMERSIVE SOUND

These three audio artists will present their creative and technical strategies in composing multi-channel works for the SAT dome. Dafna Naphtali will discuss the aesthetics and algorithms behind a multiple point-source approach used in her Audio Chandelier. Chikashi Miyama will present the compositional process for his piece, “Modulations”, using software technologies such as Pd, OpenFrameworks and GPGPU. Atau Tanaka will show how neuron impulses from different locations on the performer’s arm muscles are dispatched in the dome to create the sensation of entering the body.

By Atau Tanaka, professor of media computing at Goldsmiths, CTO of Clicmobile and new media artist (JP), Dafna Naphtali, sound artist (US) and Chikashi Miyama, composer & programmer (JP)

LIVE 360° VIDEO CAPTURE & STREAMING

The technologies for live streaming in full 360° stereoscopic video are now ready for deployment. This workshop will look at all the production chain to achieve a audio-visual quality stream with reduced latency, from the camera rigs and the stitching, to the encoding, transcoding and broad network distribution to distant viewers.

By Eric Belotti, chief technology officer at Summit Tech (CA), Phuc Le Dinh, co-founder at Suometry (CA) and Christian Eve-Lévesques, CEO at SpherePlay (CA)

3 PERFORMATIVE VR EXPERIENCES

Performative VR incorporating live performers and physical elements are a fast developing genre. This workshop invites the creators of 3 projects that are pushing the limits of immersive experience.

IN-VR REAL-TIME EDITING

For many, VR will replace the desktop metaphor for human computer interaction. The first step to this is the creation of ad-hoc and in situ content creation tools. This workshop invites 4 teams that have been working on this with amazing inspiration and success so far.

By Metalab Team (CA), Gerhard Schubert, director research lab, department of architecture, Technical University of Munich (DE), Tomás Dorta, architect and designer co-founder & CEO at Systèmes Hybridlab (CA) and Harold Durmur, founder & partner at OVA (CA)

Each pass holder (5 day or 1 day pass) will choose 2 workshops from the list (1 AM workshop + 1 PM workshop).
