4DSOUND: Techno Is Space

In this lecture, Paul Oomen reveals the ideas behind his most recent work with 4DSOUND, in where he explores the nature of spatial forms and energetic movements within techno music. The standard repertoire of electronic effects like pitch shifting, hi and lo pass filtering, shelf filtering, phasing and delay, all have an equivalent in the physical world around us. The way we hear sounds transform as we move through space, closely resembles the musical language of techno and its psycho-acoustic effect on the listener.

Oomen will present examples from some of todays most distinct techno artists, such as Mike Parker, Oscar Mulero and Peter van Hoesen, and shows how their signature sound designs evolve into their spatial form using 4DSOUND technology. By investigating techno as a musical genre and deconstructing the different spatial facets hidden within it, Oomen will elaborate on the meaning of space in musical cognition, and the nature of our perception of space.
