CARAPACE [LIVE]

Performances & Créations

>> Additional projection at 9pm

An immersive real-time audiovisual performance about the fashioning of the self expressed as ornate, unfolding architectural spaces. The ego is that with which we give ourselves form, a construct by which we ornament and protect ourselves and the shapeless, excruciating nakedness of raw being. An intimate space, encasing soft strangness and formed over a lifetime, a shell is architectural yet individual. Over the course of the performance these elegant, articulated spaces inspired by shells and exoskeletons will grow and take form, dance, and ultimately dissolve into nothingness.

The majority of the visual content will be rendered in real-time, performed with and responding to audio thereby enforcing the sense of live, intellegent form. Carapace is an existential allegory, but it also imagines a near future of biotechnology for materials in which hybrids of built and grown architecture are self-generating and mood-responsive.

Mary Franck is a new media artist working in installation and performance. She creates visceral, contemplative experiences entwined and in contrast with contemporary digital technology. She uses video as character, set, and material, using projection and real-time video to imbue an object or tangible space with image and metaphor.

Franck holds a B.A. in Conceptual and Information Art from SFSU. Her thesis was “Everyone Intimate Alone Visibly,” an evening length performance examining intimacy and access which toured nationally, created in collaboration with LEVYdance. Her art has been presented at The Lab, the San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, the Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, CounterPULSE, Z-Space, Joyce SoHo, Decibel Festival and other venues. She recently released Rouge, a live visuals tool and programming framework.

Kadet Kuhne (US)

×

Kadet Kuhne is a media artist whose work spans the audiovisual spectrum. With the goal of forming somatic experiences which can prompt visceral responses to sound and movement, Kadet openly exposes the use of technology in her practice by employing fragmented, jump-cut edits and amplifying evidence of sonic detritus. This glitch aesthetic, contrasted with layered ambient reflection, is intended to heighten tensions between motion and stasis: a balanced yet heightened "nervous system" to reflect our own. Trained in jazz guitar, Kadet became attached to the instinctive nature of improvisation which led her to the California Institute of the Arts where she studied Composition and Integrated Media.

As an award-winning filmmaker she has numerous shorts that have screened worldwide, and she also creates video & sound installations that involve a combination of motion sensors, customized software and online virtual space exploring themes of communication and control. Kadet's compositions twist signal processing, FM synthesis and neurological impulses into experimental electronic ambiences that make your cilia vibrate in curious patterns.
